Opening the box, you get the phone, a silicone case, a usb-c cable, charger and earphones
Given all the fuss about Alexa not working etc, I’ll put this section first! (which I add is in my opinion just a tiny part of the functionality and don’t forget “ok, google” does a similar job too!)
Alexa: This is a feature unique to this the phones sold by Amazon, however it doesn’t seem to work out of the box! I get a message saying it’s not compatible with the SIM of this country.
UPDATE From Moto support to get Alexa working:-
- Locate the Moto Voice for Alexa app in the app tray. Tap and hold on it under an App Info button appears
- Tap on the App Info button and then select Storage > Clear Storage > OK
- Open the Moto Voice for Alexa app and try to set it up again
Now it’s working, it really isn’t that great. It doesn’t seem to have a far field microphone like an echo dot. So you can’t shout across the room to it, instead you generally have to have it within arms length from you - oh and not on silent! Even then, the Echo Dot in the room often responds before the phone does!
So biggest use is probably in the car where you can’t use the phone with your hands. Just make sure it’s placed near your head and that your car isn’t too noisy (radio off, windows closed).
Battery: It comes with a 4000mAh battery which lasted a whole day with just over 30% remaining.
Display: The big thing you notice is that large AMOLED display. It gives very rich colour and contrast. A feature which is generally reserved for high end phones
There's a tear drop for the front camera, something which is becoming common place now and helps with the extra screen area.
The resolution is 1080 x 2340 pixels,
Note that the display is also a fingerprint sensor. It seems slightly less responsive than a dedicated sensor but seems to work well enough.
Memory/Storage: The phone comes with 4GB RAM and 128GB Storage. The 4GB isn't huge these days, and a bit mean considering Moto’s own G7 at just over half the price has this much. The 128GB storage is pretty generous.
A plus is that it also has a microSD card slot, I can confirm a 200GB micro SD works fine. Though do know you unfortunately sacrifice the dual SIM to do this due to them sharing the same slot. It is a shame really since the G6 and G7 from Motorola provide both dual SIM and SD at the same time no problem.
Processor: It comes with an Octa-core Snapdragon 675, pretty quick. Weaker than the 8 series found on high end phones, but still more than capable for day to day tasks and certainly faster than my old phone (Moto Z2 Play).
To put things in perspective, some Geekbench 4 scores
Moto One Zoom: ~6500
Moto Z2 Play: ~4500
Moto G7: ~4600
Nokia 8: ~6500
Samsung Galaxy S10+: ~10000
Nokia 3.2: ~2400
Camera: The real show piece here, with 4 rear cameras much like the very high end phones and the first time I’ve seen it in this price range.
Rear 1. Main lens is a 48MP wide angle which actually only outputs 12MP and is optically stabilized.
Rear 2. Telephoto lens offering 3x optical zoom with sensor outputting 8MP
Rear 3. Ultrawide 13mm sensor at 16MP providing 0.5x zoom
Rear 4. Depth sensor at 5MP. Not a real camera as such, but for letting the software to determine foreground from background for nice portraits with blurred backgrounds.
Front camera: which is 25MP, though only outputs 6MP for selfies, which is more than enough.
Connectivity: Dual SIM is supported which is good, unfortunately not at the same time as SD card, which is a real shame since Moto's own G6 and G7 series costing almost half the price both manage to.
The phone has a USB-C connector for charging
Wifi supports b/g/n/ac so both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.
Still has a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Pros
- Amazing 6.39 inch AMOLED display with 1080x2340 resolution.
- Amazingly, 4 rear cameras including a 3x optical zoom lens
- Good battery life
- Dual Sim (nano)
- Android 9.0
- 128GB storage is nice at the price
- micro SD card slot
- in screen finger print sensor
- comes with case
Cons
- No second SIM if using SD card slot
- no wireless charging
- 4GB RAM is a bit mean considering some phones half the price have this much
- Alexa support fiddly to set up and not as responsive as an Echo Dot, so a badly implemented gimmick
- in screen fingerprint sensor not as sensitive as a traditional dedicated one
Summary: A truly excellent phone. Definitely punches way above its weight. The camera system is superb and other than a drop in processor power and loss of wireless charging, really has a high end feature set at the price point of a mid range phone.
I’m very glad I bought this, and fully recommend this to anyone else who wants to pay mid range price to get a high spec zoom camera phone.
Update 16 dec 2019: having used it for just over 3 months, I thought I'd give a quick update.
Firstly its still a great phone, and I find that the battery always lasts the whole day.
In terms of indoor low light zoom photos and videos, the picture quality does suffer, though given the physical size of the lens, you can understand. Low light photos with the normal lens are just fine.
I've placed a 400GB microSD card and that works just fine.
Overall, I'd still rate this as highly as when I first got it.
Update 3 June 2020: Have used this daily for around 9 months now. Still as good as it was when first new. I've had numerous security patches applied and the phone is just as stable as it was when new. No noticeable slowdowns in performance. No overheating or excessive battery drain. The battery will easily last the whole day still, lasting with about 30% battery if I'm out and about using the phone all the time, or about 60% battery if at home (during lockdown). Still happy to recommend it top marks and now has proven durability.
Update 3 Dec 2020: Have used this daily for over a year now. Battery life still seems as good as it was when new and I've never not been able to last a day from full charge. One thing which can get annoying is that my inscreen fingerprint sensor just never seems as good as the traditional type. I do wonder perhaps the screen was a bit dirty or if my thumb is.

The camera is easily one of the best I've used on a phone in this price range. The main camera delivers sharp, clear images and performs well in lower lighting conditions. The zoom lense does exactly as the the name suggests, and it does it very well. The images can be a little grainy, especially if there's less light, but there is a surprising amount of detail. Combined with the OIS, you can get some quite nice, detailed pictures with the zoom lense. The same goes for videos.
Now for the not so great. This is a tall phone with a smooth glass back and a massive camera module. It is very top-heavy and the back is very slippery which means it's almost impossible it to use one handed without a grippy case. If you're using it one-handed and you move your hand to tap on anything, it quite easily topples out the top of your hand and onto the floor.
If you want the latest version of Android, then do not buy this phone. It is highly unlikely at this point it will get anything higher than android 9. There is still monthly security updates, however. That being said, if you don't care about updates and want an affordable phone with a great camera, and good performance, this phone is a great choice .

Now to the device: Value for money with the specs you get, storage, screen, battery, camera, stockish Android and expandability (2 Sims, 1 Sim 1 SD card). Yes the processor is not this generations fastest but I don't need that. I need storage, good cameras, large battery and an oled screen!
Yes there are issues such as a notch but then again it has a headphone jack.

The reason for purchasing the Zoom was the camera array and naturally the zoom. Unfortunately, that's the one part of the phone I didn't like. First the good, nice feel and professional appearance, no noticeable lag and compared to the G7 Plus did feel a little faster, however, nothing that would make me prefer it over my current phone.
Sadly the Camera just wasn't up to the job. It had good clarity, the zoom was very good but it was the colours, they just didn't match up. Red comes out almost orange and photos just look flat. Naturally with editing a lot of that can be corrected but with the G7 Plus doing good photos straight away (with no editing needed) why the hassle?
Having seen more reviews this does seem to be a software issues rather than a hardware one, however, I'm not going to risk waiting and have gone back to the G7 Plus. Anyone wanting a good Camera phone From Motorola, thats the one to get!

The phone feels good in the hand and functions swiftly without pause. I can report that the Alexa functionality is working as intended (I'm on Three).
The camera is nice, the zoom is a welcome addition and can allegedly zoom further than the new iPhone 11 Pro, though you do notice the Image Stabilisation as it slows down what you're seeing (if you've ever used a DSLR camera's rear screen for taking pictures you'll understand this). The photo quality ranges drastically as the cameras in the phone are tuned differently depending on what zoom level you're using. It's nowhere near as good as some others and puts doubt in my mind as to why I bothered with the Zoom edition and not the Play or Charge.
It's nice to finally have a decent amount of onboard storage at 128gb, though 4gb of RAM is lacking in this price-range. The fingerprint sensor works well and looks modern/cool.
Notes: Can't merge an SD card as internal storage or store apps on it, but you can choose it as the directory for camera photos and videos. Motorola provide a transparent soft TPU protective cover, which is a welcome addition, though it's not as reinforced as third-party covers like those from SLEO. Headphones, and the jack needed for them, are also included.
Update 1: The battery seemed at first to drain rather quickly, but after 6 months of use I can say it's pretty good, especially if you use the Battery Saver function -- I don't know if there was a patch for it, but definitely no complaints as I can go a few days without charging and when it does need the cable (USB C) it charges super quick.
Also noticed the photos taken by the phone can be either amazing or terrible... you see, the camera lenses on the phone are 0.5x (Ultra-wide), 1x (Standard) and 3x (Telephoto) which all take great pictures in their own right, but if you zoom manually to anything in between them (e.g. 0.8x, 1.7x or 8x) it resorts to using digital zoom for that particular lens which degrades the photo quality hugely! MAKE SURE TO STAY ON THE DEFAULTS.
Update 2: Phone went on a black friday deal for over £100 less than I paid. 😭
Update 3: A year on from my purchase the phone is working flawlessly and has just been updated to Android 10.
Update 4: Two years on and still working as new, though the Alexa function doesn't seem to work with the newer updates. The battery in my phone has also swollen and pushed the screen away.
Update 5: Was lucky to get a refund through Amazon as they're an official Motorola support agent and the phone was just about covered under the 2-year warranty. Have switched to a Motorola G50.
